This collaborative installation is comprised of student work from UM’s Visual and Media Arts, Creative Writing and Book Arts programs. Showcasing the kind of innovative cross-disciplinary engagement that is rarely found outside a university setting, it serves to both celebrate and defend the life-affirming nexus of creativity and community.

Artist Statement: Her work addresses how Christianity and conservatism have molded her identity by dictating how individuals should behave, how desire should be contained, and how identity should be performed. She points out flaws in believing in a Christian feminine ideal in physical appearance, expression, and responsibility in an age when subjectivity reigns over sensuality and human experience, and how to break beyond that.

Artist Statement: The artwork represents an incident I witnessed of an impromptu team of crows and magpies working together to mob a red-tail hawk after it tried to raid one of their nests. It was a fascinating aerial dance of swoops, dips and dives.

Artist Statement: Release of the Ephemeral is both veneration and condemnation. Exploring grief at arm’s length, this piece both enshrines and says goodbye to a version of self which could only exist in the eyes of others.

Artist Statement: My work grapples with social anxiety and the feeling of isolation and loneliness within groups, desperately wanting to fit but unable to jump in with ease. By painting self-assured individuals in moments that I feel are off-kilter, I can examine their behaviors to try to perhaps unlock the secret to their ease. In choosing ambiguous scenes, the viewer is confronted with a multitude of questions and how to react to what is happening.

Artist Statement: This piece imagines Missoula in the distant future if climate change were to result in the return of Lake Missoula. And if it were to, I imagine Missoulians would make the best of it and likely go fishing.

Artist Statement: Incandescent explores the balance between light and abstraction. Using a photo from a local Missoula hike, Lilly captures light unexpectedly. Warping the ways in which light falls on snow, she uses a variety of materials to capture the essence of what it feels like to absorb the sun on a warm winter’s day.
