Dúuppeelee: Konnaalaásxawiikaashe (To become spilt: To have pain inflicted on one’s heart) - Stella Nall
48” x 96”
Original mural: Acrylic on MDO panel
Hanger-free and customizable for any hanging or framing system. Weatherized and suitable for indoor or outdoor display.
Artist Statement:As an artist I am driven by three primary forces: to process my experiences, to connect with others, and to advocate for change. Dúuppeelee: Konnaalaásxawiikaashe is informed by my experiences growing up as the first generation of my mother’s family denied enrollment in the Crow tribe due to the current blood quantum requirement. Some of the imagery that I use is drawn from tradition, and some I developed to speak to my own experiences. Like many other mixed race Indigenous people, at times I face emotional confusion and identity questions raised by the current discourse surrounding the concept of authenticity, tribal enrollment, and the qualifications for federal recognition. I have gravitated towards making artwork to sort through my personal thoughts regarding these experiences and hope to raise awareness to the issues that have shaped my identity and continue to shape the future of Indigenous communities across the United States and Canada.
