Missoula Redux

September 2020 - February 2021

The first building constructed at 120 N Higgins was occupied by McKay Art Company. Proprietor Rollin H. Mckay was a prolific photographer who documented Missoula's neighborhood and architecture, citizens and community events throughout the first half of the 20th Century.

Today, 120 N Higgins has been beautifully reconstructed and reimagined, designed by the current owners with its art-filled historical footprint in mind. In that vein, Allez set out to create an exhibition that drew from Missoula's past and honored the vibrant creativity of its present. Seven artists were each given a different photograph taken by McKay, or his predecessor F.M. Ingalls (who documented Missoula from the 1880's to the 1910's). The artists manipulated the photos in their respective styles, using digital tools or hand-applied mediums. The seven artworks were then scanned, enlarge, printed and installed on the Allez walls. The resulting exhibition- Missoula Redux- hopes to convey something simultaneously old and new, connecting artists and viewers across the divide of time.

Artist Statement: On November 11, 1903, the smash hit Edwardian musical comedy “Florodora” came to Missoula’s Union Opera House. The real stars of the musical were the sextette of “tall, gorgeous damsels, carrying frilly parasols, wearing pink walking costumes”. These damsels came to be known as the “Florodora Girls”, and their popularity and sometimes, notoriety, exceeded the life of the show, and many of them went on to huge careers, most notably Evelyn Nesbit, who became the model for the ideal beauty standard at the turn of the 19th century.

Artist Statement: In this piece I wanted to highlight not only MMLW (murdered and missing indigenous women), but the warrior culture and resilience of my Pikuni/Blackfoot people. The male warriors in this piece are taking their role back as protectors and their first line of defense. The warrior woman on the horse is to show the strength of all the indigenous warrior women who have stepped up and led the fight since colonization, as well as the past warrior women who have led their people in a great way.

Artist Statement: I am interested in the aspects of the supernatural, or, as I call it, Native lore of my culture. I take the entities/myths and reorchestrate them into familiar settings. Open to the reality that these entities may be more influential than given credit for.

Artist Statement: Missoula has been my home for most of my life, and though I wasn't born or raised here, it will always be the home of my heart. Artist Statement: I had fun getting to explore every square inch of this photograph. The process felt like the uncovering of a hidden layer of reality; a mythological happening that directly lines up with a local historical moment.
